PRESS RELEASE OF THE GREEN LEAGUE FOR CULTURE

Published: 25.04.2007
BASIC INCOME – TOWARDS A FUNCTIONING SOCIAL SECURITY SYSTEM A research report on basic income by The Green League for Culture was published today. The report on basic income of the The Green League for Culture is a result of a whole year’s research project. Special researcher Pertti Honkanen from Kela’s (The Social Insurance Institution of Finland) research department presents in the report calculated microsimulation models of the basic income. Osmo Soininvaara, researcher of basic income for many years, ponders upon the societal effects of the basic income model, and project coordinator of The Green League for Culture, Ville Ylikahri, presents different models for basic income and arguments for income from different decennia. The studies of the basic income project were used as background material by the Green Party when it created its own basic income model last February. This report offers a broader view of the different sides of the concept of the basic income. The new government is launching a wide reform of the social security system. Its aims are, according to the government programme, to make work more motivating, to decrease poverty and to guarantee adequate social security at all stages of life. The report presents ideas for obtaining these targets with the help of the basic income. It shows that elements attached to the basic income can be included in the current social system in multiple ways. The calculations of the report show how a partial basic income could be introduced in Finland in a cost-effective manner. The report (in Finnish) can be ordered from the Green League for Culture or downloaded in a pdf format from their website www.visili.fi/perustulo.pdf.
