Climate Debate Heats Up As Elections Approach
Climate change is not a new phenomenon, but in the Finnish political debate it has become a real issue only during the last few months. Environmental debate that was previously limited to small circles has suddenly become an election theme.
So far only the experts, and lately even quite a few political decision-makers, have taken part in the discussion. Citizens’ contributions have remained few.
The first report of the e2 gives the floor to citizens. On Monday, 29 January the e2 publishes the first extensive study on Finns’ attitudes and ideas on climate change. The report, compiled in late 2006 and early 2007 reveals how big a threat people consider climate change to be, whose information people rely on, what kind of measures are expected from the decision-makers, and where people think the world is heading.
At the same time the report reveals the differences – as well as similarities – between the different citizen groups.
