Poverty as Potential
Public lecture by Professor Majid Rahnema

The Institute for Development Studies of the University of Helsinki and Think Tank e2 warmly welcome you to a lecture given by Professor Majid Rahnema on Thursday, November 26th at 14-16 hours in Fabiankatu 26, room 204.

Majid Rahnema was a career ambassador of Iran. Appointed as Minister of Science and Higher Education, he resigned four years later to initiate in Alashtar (Lorestan) a set of grassroots, people-centred development activities that started in the late sixties and lasted until 1979.   At the international level, he held various positions, namely as U.N. Commissioner for supervising the elections in Rwanda (1961), Member of the Executive Board of Unesco (1976-1980), , Council Member of the U.N. University (1974-1980), Resident Representative in Mali (1979-83) and Special Advisor of the UNDP Administrator for Grassroots & NGO activities.

Since he retired from the U.N., he has been a long time Visiting Professor at U.C.Berkeley & Pitzer College in California. His attention focuses on the blind spots of established institutions and the need for every human being to rediscover one’s own power of regeneration as the key to the reinvention of larger social and political orders.

In his writings, he has critically examined the darker sides of such established institutions as Education, Development, Aid and Poverty Eradication programmes. He has been a co-author of Learning to Be Unesco,1972,  Le Nord Perdu, Repères pour l’Après-développement, Lausanne1991,  The Post-Development Reader, Zed Book, 1982, Quand la misère chasse la pauvreté, Fayard/Actes-Sud, 2002, and La Puissance des pauvres (with Jean Robert), Actes-Sud, 2005. He lives in France.
