The KANTTI project strengthens psychological resilience in workplaces

Press Release

A new project by E2 Research, Supporting Psychological Resilience and Preparedness for Prolonged Crises in Workplaces (KANTTI), examines how the mental ability to withstand crises can be strengthened in Finnish workplaces.

The stability and functioning of society are supported by comprehensive preparedness for potential crises. For example, pandemics, extreme weather events, and changes in the international security environment justify preparing also for prolonged and wide-ranging crises.

Workplaces play a key role in preparedness: they have a central responsibility in maintaining the functioning of society during times of crisis. The effective functioning of workplaces and the psychological resilience of those working in them help ensure that society keeps running in all circumstances.

“Psychological resilience is a key component of the functioning of society. Here, it refers to the ability of individuals, communities, and society to withstand the strain caused by crisis situations and to recover from their impacts. Psychological resilience is essential for maintaining operational capacity during a crisis, but its foundation is built under normal circumstances,” describes Atte Penttilä, researcher in the project.

“The mental ability to withstand crises has been recognised as an important element of Finland’s comprehensive security. In the KANTTI project, we examine how preparedness for a possible prolonged crisis is perceived across sectors critical to the security of supply. We also develop capacities to strengthen psychological resilience, for example, through leadership practices. This work is done in collaboration with a variety of working life actors, says Mari K. Niemi, Project Director.

“The added value of the KANTTI project is based on examining Finnish working life from the perspective of psychological resilience. Managing stress factors and ensuring continuity of everyday operations, even during crises, strengthens security and trust. The functionality of workplaces supports the stability of society as a whole,” assesses Annukka Ylivaara, Assistant Secretary General from the Secretariat of the Security Committee and representative of the project’s advisory board.

KANTTI produces research-based knowledge and policy recommendations that support workplace preparedness and the strengthening of psychological resilience. At the same time, the project promotes cross-sectoral learning and the sharing of good practices in everyday workplace activities and leadership practices.

KANTTI will be implemented during 2026 and is funded by the National Defence Support Foundation.
